McQ lives up to its reputation with a stunning London Fashion Week debut show

On a catwalk strewn with thousands of Autumn leaves, Sarah Burton and the team at Alexander McQueen staged the first ever McQ show. and while McQ may be the more affordable diffusion label, this didn’t mean the show lacked any of the spectacle associated with an Alexander McQueen show. being there felt like being part of something very special indeed.

The show kicked off with sharp, military-inspired clothes; belted trench coats with metal buttons, leather suiting, beige and khaki suits with chain detail belts, coats with fluffy fur-like trims and beautiful heavy wool tartans, all teamed with riveted over-the-knee boots.

Softening up as we moved into eveningwear, stiff velvet dresses featured textured overlays and curly wool detail in deep green and rich red, before dresses went strapless with sheer sleeves, boots went ankle length and long leather gloves added drama.

But it was when one of a series of full-skirted looks with net underskirts hit the catwalk that we really stood to attention. First topped with a fitted black velvet jacket, and later on prom-style dresses with lacy sheer sleeves and tulle overlays, a stunning black-backed fabric featuring a profusion of coloured flowers, layered on top of each other, was a very cool take on a floral print.

Next came brocade coats and dresses in burgundy and black, also over full skirts with netting and a nipped-in waist. the show ended with two similar ballet-length dresses in net and tulle with floral embroidery and pleats and layering at the bust; first in black, and then in white – a ready-to-wear take on the traditional closing bride at couture shows.

The McQ bride didn’t just stand there looking pretty, either – after standing under falling leaves, she unearthed a rope beneath them. Following it led her up the catwalk, through a misty (indoor) wood and into a hidden building. as the show came to a close, guests were invited to walk through the wood and discover the model having her own little party in this ‘shed’!

It was a brilliant ending to a beautiful show – clothes that were striking yet wearable, and beautifully styled. Here’s to McQ becoming a permanent fixture on the London Fashion Week schedule. take a look at our full gallery of images from the show by clicking the image at the top of the post.
