As Hunters Ready To Curb Bear Population In NJ, Animal Activists Plan Rally

HIGHLAND LAKES, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — a bear hunt kicks off Monday in parts of New Jersey after a court ruled against opponents’ pleas to stop the hunt from happening.

“behind my house, I can see the hunters. I can hear them when they fire the shots. It’s very disturbing,” said Angie Metler, Executive Director for the Animal Protection League of New Jersey.

Metler is again vowing and fighting this year to stop the state’s controversial bear hunt.

“The hunt is nothing but a trophy hunt for hunters to bring home rugs, mounts and wall trophies,” she told CBS 2′s Ann Mercogliano.

State officials say the hunt is meant to help control a bear population that’s getting dangerously out of hand.

An appeals court ruled the hunt could happen this year, denying claims that the state’s policy was flawed. Opponents say an appeal to that decision is in the works.

Parts of Sussex, Warren, Morris, Passaic, Bergen, Somerset and Hunterdon Counties will be approved bear hunting grounds. Last year nearly 600 were killed during the hunt.

Hunter Fred Hasert of Barry Lakes told Mercogliano that he will join the hunt to protect his family.

“They’re in my backyard a lot, and I have a young daughter, always aware of her being out there with the bear,” he said.

Metler says the solution to controlling the black bear population in New Jersey lies in a bear-resistant garbage cans that, she says, every resident should have.

Hunting store owner Sig Borstad disagrees.

“if they can’t get figure out how to open them, they’ll jump up and down on them until they pop open,” the Sig Borstad Archery owner said.

Opponents also say a permit to protest was denied, but they still plan to hold a vigil in sight of hunters getting ready to enter the woods.

A lot of companies sell themselves on the fact that they are an authorized dealer of the products they sell. but what is an authorized dealer exactly? why does it matter? And does it really benefit consumers to make sure they buy from one?

Short answer: Yes. It really does matter.

If things always worked out like we’d like them to, every item we purchased as consumers – like watches, headphones, TVs, toys, and computers – would work perfectly and without defects. they would function for as long as their normal useful life. there would be no glitches, crashes, or breaks. And we’d have no complaints.

But this is the real world.

Herein lies the problem in dealing with an unauthorized seller; the manufacturer has no relationship with them or control over the products they sell. they may sell items with missing serial numbers. they may be selling damaged or used items. Or pawning off refurbished items as new.

Any, or all of these practices can void a manufacturer’s warranty. Naturally, this is going to limit your chances of finding a resolution to whatever product issue you experience, especially if the unauthorized seller doesn’t offer assistance either.

It’s a frustrating, expensive, and unfortunate scenario that happens much more often than it should.

The bottom line? do your research and when applicable, make your purchases from an authorized dealer. It’s best way to protect your investment. these retailers are held to certain standards of practice and service that unauthorized companies are not. Plus, you can rest easy knowing that your item is covered by the manufacturer’s full warranty, and that you’ll have support after the sale is made.

Check with a company before you buy. And if the item you’re buying is especially expensive or requires a significant level of support, check with the manufacturer for their list of dealers first.

Used cars import crippling local vendors

These vendors are providing jobs to almost 200,000 skilled workers who feared losing jobs if imports of used vehicles are continued in high numbers. – File photo

KARACHI: the local car vendor industry has said that more precious foreign exchange will be wasted on import of parts and accessories for over 33,000 used cars (older than five years) that arrived in the last over six months under the guise of facilitating overseas Pakistanis.

Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM) Chairman Syed Nabeel Hashmi claimed that used cars are mostly those vehicles that have been repaired or stolen. the huge arrival of used cars will surely also entail huge expenditure of foreign exchange on spare parts imports.

He said the worst part is that every vehicle imported is also a lost opportunity for our economy to create any employment.

In a statement on Thursday, he called for the immediate rescinding of SRO 577(I) 2005 or update of its US$ based values which are out dated and have created an un realistic window for import of these used vehicles. Giving customs a discretion to further reduce applicable duties by up to 60 per cent have literally made imports of used cars free into Pakistan.

Munir K. Bana, Vice Chairman PAAPAM said instead of giving attention to the core issue of curtailing inflationary trend engulfing resources and endangering national integrity the government is allowing import of each and every thing into Pakistan to jeopardise local industry.

On rising prices of locally assembled cars, he said the best way of reducing car prices is to increase level of localisation.

He emphasised on implementation of Auto Industry Development Programme (AIDP) in letter and spirit to achieve the target.

Meanwhile, Shaikh Muhammad Iqbal, General Manager Sales and Marketing, Balochistan Wheels Limited told Dawn that used vehicles were being imported at the cost of the local automobile industry.

Hundreds of components such as wheel rims, tyres, batteries, radiators, mufflers, wire harness, instrument panel, steering wheels, air conditions, sun visor,

other sheet metal parts and plastic parts etc., which are produced by local vendors, are badly hit by import of used vehicles.

Moreton-In-Marsh Caravan Club Site

In mid-May we went off to the Caravan Club site Moreton-in-Marsh situated with the Cotswolds countryside. Moreton is a lovely old market town with its main street still being part of the old Fosse way built by the Romans and for us it’s a great weekend venue being just under an hour from home. However with its location, Moreton-In-Marsh is also a good base for a longer stay to explore the wider Cotswold area.

The site itself and its showers, toilet blocks and other facilities are of the usual high Caravan Club standard with 183 pitches, most of which are spacious and hard standing. There is a Motor caravan Service Point, which is always welcomed by us Motor homers, plus a reasonable Wi-Fi network for those who need to keep in touch with the outside world.

There is a large play area which is great with its adventure climbing frame for the children and basketball, and for the ‘adults’ – boules and a crazy golf course which we played for an hour or so. Don’t worry that you do not have the right equipment because you can borrow putters and balls from reception for a small deposit.

Once again, for us one of the biggest selling points of this, or any other caravan site, is that it is within easy walking distance (just 5-10 minutes) to the small market town of Moreton-in-Marsh and public transport is available within a mile with routes to Cheltenham, Banbury or Stratford-upon-Avon to mention a few places. Market day is Tuesday and the town itself is very compact to walk around with a choice of pubs, restaurants, small hotels, bistros and cafes serving food.

Moreton-in-Marsh also has some quaint Cotswold gift shops and speciality food shops to wander around and, for the sports lover, if you are into your cricket on the Saturday why not walk to the far end of Moreton-in-Marsh, near Budgens supermarket, turn left down Batsford road to the lovely little Cricket ground and sit and have a cool drink sitting on one of the benches and watch some cricket to while away your afternoon.

If you are only able to make Moreton-in-Marsh for the weekend, and the site is not fully booked, you could ask at reception if you may be able to arrange a late checkout, which gives you the opportunity to have a Sunday Roast at one of the hotels, have another wander around the shops and then make your way home after a relaxing and enjoyable weekend in the Cotswold countryside.

Walking in Wet Weather – Top 5 Items to Keep You Dry

Don’t let the weather put you off getting outdoors for a walk or hike. I think the worst thing about walking is setting off in the pouring rain. However, if you have the proper walking gear you can cope with those wet days anytime of the year. Follow my tips for the top 5 items that will ensure you have a dry and comfortable day.

1.Waterproof Jacket
These can be expensive but are really worth every penny and if you look after your jacket it will serve you faithfully for many years. Jackets are available for general walking about town, in the low hills and forest walks. While a jacket for mountaineering will be more technical and more expensive. You may wish to consider a multi-activity jacket which covers a range of activities like running, biking, scrambling and climbing. I recommend a Gore-Tex jacket with a built in hood which is waterproof and breathable thus keeping you dry but at the same time allows the sweat from your body to escape preventing condensation.

2.Waterproof Trousers
I consider these an absolute must-have although many walker’s dislike wearing them. Surely your waterproof coat will be sufficient to keep your top half dry, warm and comfortable. what happens is that water from your top half efficiently runs off your jacket and soaks your bottom half resulting in wet and cold legs and feet. It’s much better to have a pair of waterproof over-trousers at the ready for the first signs of a down pour. buy your trousers as you would your jacket but it’s a good idea to go for ones that open at the bottom allowing you to pull them on and off over your boots. I also prefer trousers that allow access to your pockets underneath.

3.Waterproof Gaiters
These are a good alternative if you just hate wearing waterproof trousers and prefer to use walking trousers that are water-resistant, quick-drying and of a breathable fabric. Gaiters are worn over the lower pant legs, and used primarily to stop water and debris getting into the top of your boot. they also help protect the legs against scratches from dense undergrowth. However, unlike your over-trousers they are not an accessory that one would wear about town on a wet day.

4.Waterproof Boots or Shoes
Again, I recommend Gor-Tex footwear that will keep your feet warm and dry but let them breath avoiding a build up of condensation leading to wet sweaty socks. I recommend a 3-4 season boot for UK walking. My own leather boots are Zamerlan Mountain Lite HBS while my walking partner prefers Brasher ASO GTX, both are excellent.

5.Waterproof your Rucksack
Waterproof your rucksack by putting a waterproof liner into it. You can then put all your kit inside the liner to keep everything dry. Purpose made liner can be purchased in any outdoor shop. the cheapest of these are a thick plastic bag that slips into your rucksack.

Walk with confidence when you have the essential gear that will keep you warm and dry in all weathers. Make walking more fun because there’s no doubt that walking is good for you and will give you a great feeling of well being.
